Dynamic Waterscapes Portfolio
By Matthew Allard
“Dynamic Waterscapes is a self-guided reflection, and a statement that we all have a purpose, and infinite potential locked inside of us if we reach deep enough in those tireless moments.”
Somewhere inside each of us there is a fear or self-doubt that holds us back. It is a small risk to find our true purpose, and an even bigger risk to act upon it, while leaving safety behind as we travel into the unknown. In doing this we risk rejection, but more importantly, we risk our true greatness being seen or heard and left behind in passing time. Dynamic Waterscapes explores the relationship between the change created by passage of water over immovable landscapes, and the important parallel of our passage through time, our relationship with ourself, and what type of impression we leave behind as we depart.
If we listen and look close enough, infinite possibilities surround us at each moment. The camera can only capture a brief moment in time, stopping time for an instant. By it’s very nature, it lives authentically and peacefully present in the moment, without the past and future obscuring it’s view. Out of the surrounding infinite possibilities in that moment, the photograph represents that singular choice, a dynamic waterscape reduced to a singular moment, traveling forward based on events and direction from it’s past. Our assumption of a river is that it will travel forward into the future in the same manner that it always has. We think history repeats itself, but that is only one interpretation. One of our greatest gifts is that each of us has a higher level of consciousness than the river, and with that comes the ability to choose greatness in our direction and action at any given moment, if we choose to not be defined by our past, to recognize opportunity, and depart from our limiting beliefs.
Within each of us is a self-doubt that keeps us standing on the outside looking in, that interferes with each of us having the courage to write our own story, and revealing our best qualities. In some cases we never have an opportunity to cross the same river twice. In creating this project, I pose the questions: What impression will you leave behind? What could you accomplish if you were willing to be fearless? Are you floating downstream being who you think you should be, or are you being who you truly are?
All of the work in this portfolio starts on black and white professional film, and ends with an archival pigment print with an inspirational companion essay which tells a story. The black and white print dynamically shifts us away from the vibrant and distracting reality that we know, what aligns with our preconceived expectations, our assumptions and prejudices, and helps to recreate a simpler reality that represents all that is infinitely possible. The purpose of this body of work is to inspire us to think beyond our daily existence in life, to look with a new mindset upon endless possibilities, to live free from fear, and to know that like water flowing over rock, there is a river of energy within each us that defines who we are. Our journey has less to do with ourselves, than it does with everyone who will cross our paths each day, and we have the freedom of choice.
Dynamic Waterscapes is a self-guided reflection, and a statement that we all have a purpose, and infinite potential locked inside of us if we reach deep enough in those tireless moments. The greatest achievement of this body of work will help to spark the start of a journey of introspection into your own self-purpose, help to inspire you to greatness on your way downstream, or speak to you in some way as it spoke to me in creating it.
